Dr. Varma's surgical path began with an MBBS at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, followed by an MS in General Surgery at Command Hospital Air Force.

She then completed DNB qualifications in General Surgery and in Surgical Gastroenterology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCSEd), and completed a Fellowship in Organ Transplantation covering liver, pancreas and small bowel.

Her clinical work spans living and deceased donor liver transplantation, adult and paediatric transplantation, complex liver surgery, acute liver failure and liver cancer surgery.

She also performs minimally invasive – laparoscopic and robotic – living-donor surgery for suitable donors.

Dr. Varma has contributed to the development of liver transplant programmes, and has served the regional organ-sharing system in Mumbai.

She is a founding member of the Liver Transplant Society of India and serves on the executive council of the Indian chapter of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.

In living donation there are two patients: the person who needs a liver, and the person brave enough to give part of theirs. Both are cared for with equal attention.

Every case is discussed by a multidisciplinary team, and families are guided through each step – from the first consultation to long-term follow-up.
